The Other Side

This story is about Maher Turkie, a refugee from Lebanon who moved to Sweden at the young age of six. The film takes you through his life journey over 25 years and how he got involved in criminal life in the city of Malmö; sitting on a chair and talking about his life while many incidents come back to him like a flashback. The film was selected in the Sweden Short Film Festival 2020 and won the Honor Prize.

Firas Mukarker is a filmmaker from Beit Jala, born in Jerusalem 1984, and currently based between Palestine and Sweden. He began his career in photography in 2009, winning several local and international prizes for his still photography. In 2014 he moved to Sweden where he shifted his focus towards filmmaking and moving images. He went to film school in Gothenburg (2018) and studied fiction and documentary filmmaking. THE OTHER SIDE is his first short documentary film, which won several prizes in Scandinavia, and he currently working on a new film project to be completed by the end of the year.

This event was part of Dar Jacir's online program organized in response to the coronavirus emergency. Foregrounding solidarity and care our program focused on bringing together our family of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers and dancers to lead programs and remain connected while we are physically separated.
